Appleseed Seeks Behavioral Researcher & Strategist: Remote Worldwide Job | Up to $124,000 Salary | 4-Day Week
Overview
Appleseed is looking for an experienced Behavioral Researcher and Strategist to join its international team working on complex social and environmental challenges. The opportunity is available worldwide, as either a full-time Core Team position or a Freelance Project Lead role. It is aimed at senior professionals. The work combines behavioral research, strategy, storytelling and client partnership, including immersive qualitative fieldwork in low-resource settings using methods such as contextual interviews, observation, journey mapping, shadowing and co-creation. Researchers diagnose behavioral causes of problems, turn findings into strategies covering messaging, habits, organisational change, products, services and environments, and present them to clients as narratives, frameworks, playbooks and recommendations.
Projects typically last 10 to 15 weeks: about 4 to 6 weeks of part-time remote preparation, then 2 to 3 weeks of full-time in-country fieldwork, then 4 to 6 weeks of part-time remote synthesis and reporting. Topics include agriculture, clean water, sanitation, healthcare, education and early childhood development. Core Team hires begin with an approximately four-month freelance project to test mutual fit.
What you get
Core Team salary is 95,000 to 124,000 dollars, with potential growth beyond 160,000. Freelance Project Leads earn 20,000 to 22,000 dollars per project, with approved international travel covered separately. Benefits include a four-day week with Thursdays off, flexible location, workspace and professional-development stipends, and paid international travel.
Who can apply
Suitable backgrounds include behavioral or UX research, communications and insights strategy, narrative strategy, social-impact consulting, field research, service design and entrepreneurship. Candidates need practical experience applying behavior-change principles, strong research and analytical skills, field experience, storytelling, client management and the ability to work independently across time zones and in challenging environments, with a commitment to social and environmental impact.

Applicants use Appleseed's recruitment page. The process has an application of about one hour, a 45-minute interview, practical simulations of around two to four hours involving research, synthesis and live feedback, reference checks and further conversations. No deadline is stated.
