Overview
The American Physical Society (APS) is looking for an experienced Science Writer and Social Media Content Creator to join its Strategic Communications and Public Relations team on a temporary, remote contract. The person translates complex scientific research into engaging content for scientists, journalists and the public, helping promote APS research, journals and activities through social media and other channels. The work may also support broader communications such as press outreach and APS News. Availability during core U.S. Eastern Time hours is required.
What you will do
Duties include writing social media posts, press materials and long-form stories, sourcing or creating multimedia assets, reviewing and editing for accuracy and clarity, following the APS style guide, finding timely and newsworthy science stories, helping run APS social accounts, keeping editorial calendars, publishing and editing content, engaging audiences, monitoring social media performance and tracking trends and risks.
Requirements
APS wants at least three years of relevant science-writing experience, ideally in a news organisation, research institution or scientific publishing setting. It seeks excellent writing, editing and interviewing skills, the ability to simplify complex concepts, multimedia and social media science communication experience, knowledge of journalistic standards, strategic thinking, organisation and good interpersonal skills. Experience with Sprout Social, Google Business Suite and Asana and fluency in AP style are expected, and a physics background is an advantage. Applicants should show experience producing content for Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Bluesky, and long-form platforms.
What you get
