UNHCR Internship Job 2026: Eligibility, Requirements, Benefits, Responsibilities and How to Apply

Overview

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is offering a Communications Intern position in its Kenya Country Office in Nairobi, Kenya. The internship is full-time at about 37 hours per week, under job reference JR2668488, with a target start date of October 1, 2026. UNHCR protects people forced to flee conflict, persecution and other crises, and communications staff help explain humanitarian situations to the public, media, governments, donors and partners.

The intern works alongside the communications team and gains exposure to several areas of humanitarian communication, both traditional and digital, within the Communications and Public Information area.

What you will do

Tasks include monitoring media coverage of UNHCR Kenya, helping prepare stories, social media copy, reports and fact sheets, and updating stories and other content on UNHCR channels. The intern contributes content for social media platforms, supports creative work in photography, video editing and graphic design, and helps with communications events, press briefings, workshops and conferences. The role also involves keeping communications records, forms and documentation in order.

Who can apply

The role is aimed at current students and recent graduates. Candidates should have completed at least two years of undergraduate study in an area relevant to UNHCR's work, and recent graduates may be considered within the specified graduation period. A background in communications or public relations is particularly relevant, and the position suits those interested in journalism, digital media, storytelling and humanitarian affairs. Strong writing and editing skills are valued, along with accuracy and the ability to explain complex humanitarian issues clearly and responsibly. UNHCR limits cumulative internship experience, so people who have previously interned with the agency should check those limits.
