Overview

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) offers a six-month internship in its Mitigation Division, within the Regulatory Framework Implementation (RFI) team. The announcement number is 26/Intern27/Mitigation/RFI. The internship is expected to start in October 2026 and is full-time at 40 hours per week. The primary location is Bonn, Germany, and work may be on-site, remote or a mix, depending on the candidate's circumstances and internship permit requirements. The internship is unpaid.

The RFI team contributes to regulatory guidelines, standards and policies on greenhouse gas estimation, mitigation activities and technical assessments. This internship focuses on methodological issues linked to Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement and greenhouse gas removal activities.

What the intern does

The intern works under the direct supervision of a Programme Officer in the RFI Removal unit, with wider guidance from team leads. Tasks include desk research on methodological questions about greenhouse gas removals and emission reductions, and collecting, compiling and analyzing data on standards for removals and emission reductions, including how those standards are evolving.

The intern also assists with written materials on climate methodologies, removal activities, emission reductions and Article 6.4 mechanism work, works alongside subject-matter specialists and Article 6.4 mechanism experts, and may help organize events on these topics.

Who can apply

Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate programme, such as a master's, an equivalent second university degree or a PhD, at a recognized university, or be in the final academic year of a first university degree of at least bachelor's level. Preferred backgrounds include engineering, environmental sciences, economics, climate change, sustainable development and greenhouse gas estimation, or related technical or policy fields. Strong analytical ability, attention to detail and clear technical writing are valuable.
