NATO Internship Programme 2026: Earn €1,335 Monthly Plus Travel Support
Overview
The NATO Internship Programme gives university students and recent graduates professional experience within an international security organization. Placements are based mainly at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, where interns contribute to real projects. Internships generally last six months and cover many fields, including political affairs, defence and security, communications, finance, human resources, science and technology, innovation, operations, infrastructure and business support.
What you get
For the 2026 programme, NATO lists a monthly stipend of €1,335, which comes to roughly €8,010 over six months. Eligible interns may also receive return travel support of up to €1,200 and are entitled to 15 days of paid leave during the six-month period. The stipend can be adjusted periodically, so later cohorts may receive a different amount.
Interns work with staff from different countries and professional backgrounds, which can build communication, teamwork and analytical skills. The internship does not guarantee permanent employment.
Who can apply
The programme is generally aimed at students and recent graduates from NATO member countries. Applicants must generally be at least 21 years old. Depending on the application route, they may qualify if they have completed at least two years of university study and are enrolled in their third year, obtained their highest degree within the previous year, or are currently enrolled in a master's or PhD programme.
Requirements
Applicants must show proficiency in English or French, NATO's two official working languages. Previous professional experience is not mandatory, but relevant employment, internship or volunteer work can strengthen an application. Specific educational qualifications, skills and experience vary between vacancies, so each description should be read closely.
How to apply
NATO normally opens its internship application period around April or May each year. Candidates apply through NATO's recruitment system and can generally apply for up to three internship positions. A strong CV should cover academic background, relevant projects, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, language skills and any previous professional experience.
