Overview
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is offering an internship in Phytosanitary Treatments at its laboratories in Seibersdorf, Lower Austria, Austria. It is hosted by the NAFA-Insect Pest Control Laboratory within the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, which works on sterile insect technology and other environmentally friendly ways to manage major insect pests. The intern supports research and development on phytosanitary treatments for economically important fruit flies, which cause agricultural losses and complicate the trade of fresh fruit.
What you will do
Duties include maintaining fruit fly colonies and preparing larval and adult diets, taking part in experiments on cold treatments, hot-water treatments and irradiation, dissecting fruit used in experiments, recording experimental data and assisting with thermocouple calibration measurements.
Who can apply
Applicants need a university degree in Biology or Agricultural Sciences, and experience rearing economically important fruit flies is desirable. They must be at least 20 years old and have completed at least three years of full-time university study toward a first degree, or be recent graduates within one year of finishing a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree. Anyone who has already done an IAEA internship is not eligible. Strong English is essential, and Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is an advantage.
