Overview

The International Monetary Fund runs a summer internship designed for PhD students in economics. This full-time program lasts between 10 to 12 weeks, running from 7 June 2027 to 27 August 2027 at the IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC. Participants work alongside experienced economists on individual research or project assignments, applying academic knowledge to real policy questions affecting member countries. Interns gain hands-on research experience, build professional networks, and may present their findings to IMF staff or see their work published internally.

Who can apply

Applicants must be enrolled as students at the time of the internship, remain within one to two years of completing a PhD in macroeconomics or a related field, and return to their academic studies afterward. Candidates must be under 32 years of age when the program begins in June 2027, with the only exception being time spent in mandatory military service. Previous participants in the program are not eligible to reapply.

What you get

The internship is a paid, full-time opportunity requiring 40 hours per week at IMF Headquarters. For participants who are not United States citizens, permanent residents, or otherwise authorized to work in the country, the IMF provides the supporting documentation needed for a G4 visa application. The institution does not provide housing, leaving interns responsible for arranging their own accommodation.

Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate excellent written and spoken English alongside strong analytical, quantitative, and computer skills. The application submission requires a CV or resume, a statement of interest or cover letter, a technical questionnaire, and evidence of current student status and academic performance via a recent transcript or an official enrollment and grades letter from the university. Incomplete submissions are not considered.

How to apply

Candidates must submit their online application through the official IMF careers site. The application package includes the completed technical questionnaire, CV, statement of interest, and proof of student status and grades. Following submission, applicants receive an automated confirmation, and only shortlisted candidates are contacted by the recruitment team.

Key dates

The internship runs from 7 June 2027 to 27 August 2027.
