Overview

Apple invites PhD students in hardware engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, and related fields to submit their resumes to express interest in future Hardware PhD Internship opportunities in the United States. This ongoing expression of interest allows doctoral researchers to apply advanced academic knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. Interns may work alongside Apple engineers on technologies that support products such as the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac computers, and Apple Vision Pro. Responsibilities may involve electrical and system design, experimentation, testing, validation, and qualification of electrical subsystems across various specialized engineering areas.

Who can apply

Applicants must currently be pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a related field. Additionally, at the end of the internship, the student must either return to an academic programme to continue their education or have the internship constitute the final requirement for graduation. Candidates with relevant academic research, technical projects, teaching assistant experience, previous internships, or professional experience may have an advantage.

Requirements

Strong candidates may possess knowledge of computer architecture, digital logic design and verification, digital and analog circuit analysis, analog integrated circuits, chip design, and microarchitecture. Relevant expertise may also encompass antenna and RF engineering, cellular and wireless technologies, over-the-air testing, high-speed signals, wireless communication theory, RF circuit design, and CPU and GPU architecture. Beneficial programming and hardware-development experience includes working with C, C++, Python, Perl, SQL, Assembly, Objective-C, VHDL, and Verilog RTL. Valuable laboratory skills involve using spectrum analysers, network analysers, and oscilloscopes, as well as interpreting schematics, physical design, circuit debugging, FPGA development, or PCB-based systems.

How to apply

Interested doctoral students can apply by submitting a resume through the official Apple careers application portal. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
