Gates Foundation AI Fellow Program 2027

Overview

The Gates Foundation AI Fellow Program 2027 seeks to accelerate the responsible and impactful use of artificial intelligence in education, development, and global health. This initiative forms the first Africa-based AI Fellows cohort, bringing participants together with the Africa team, government counterparts, and partners to apply AI tools toward critical decision-making. Fellows take on ownership of one to two high-priority projects aimed at advancing the foundation’s core mission.

Who can apply

Applicants are required to hold a bachelor or master degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Math, or Engineering. Candidates need a minimum of two years of experience applying artificial intelligence solutions, with a preference for backgrounds in agricultural or health systems. Individuals must possess authorization to legally work in the country of placement without requiring visa sponsorship, as relocation support is not offered.

Requirements

Participants must possess a strong background in modern machine learning and artificial intelligence, covering model evaluation, modeling, and practical experience with large language models, alongside the software engineering and data skills needed for end-to-end solutions. This experience can stem from applied coursework, early professional work, research, or internships. Candidates require an interest in applying artificial intelligence to areas like public financial management, health systems, and supply chain logistics. Additional traits include adaptability, teamwork, clear communication skills for diverse audiences, and a motivation to use artificial intelligence responsibly for the public good. Practical experience in prototype building with large language models and other modern artificial intelligence tools is also necessary.
