Overview

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations offers the FAO Fellows Programme, which provides graduate students, researchers, and professors an opportunity to gain specialized learning experiences while contributing their advanced technical knowledge and research expertise. Participants undertake time-bound assignments that support FAO's Strategic Framework and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The location of the assignments depends on the specific opportunity.

Who can apply

Applicants must be nationals of FAO Member countries. Candidates are required to hold a graduate or postgraduate degree, such as a Master’s or PhD, or be currently enrolled in a PhD programme. There is no age limit for the programme. Candidates must have at least two years of relevant work or research experience in a field relevant to FAO's mandate, along with a working knowledge of at least one FAO official language, which includes English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian. Knowledge of a second official language is considered an advantage. Additionally, candidates must be able to adapt to an international and multicultural working environment, possess strong communication skills, and be comfortable using basic computer programmes. Applicants who have a close family relationship, specifically a brother, sister, mother, father, son, or daughter employed by FAO under any type of contractual arrangement, are not eligible.

What you get

The FAO Fellows Programme provides participants with a specialized learning experience and the opportunity to contribute their expertise to time-bound assignments within an international organization. The programme does not provide remuneration, and FAO does not pay a salary or fellowship stipend to Fellows.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a research proposal detailing the work they would like to undertake, ensuring that their proposed research or assignment is relevant to FAO's areas of work and aligned with the organisation's strategic priorities and international development, food and agriculture policy, and sustainable development. Candidates must also demonstrate how their academic background, professional experience, and proposed research connect with FAO's work.

How to apply

Interested candidates must submit their application online through the FAO career portal by applying to the published Call for Expression of Interest. The application process requires submitting the necessary application information along with a research proposal. Applicants who are not selected before a Call closes but wish to remain under consideration for future assignments must re-apply when a new Call for Expression of Interest is published. Only selected candidates will be contacted.
