Dr. L. David Mech Fellowship 2027: Up to US$10,000 for Wildlife Research
Overview
The Dr. L. David Mech Fellowship 2027 is a research opportunity offered by the International Wolf Center to support undergraduate students and recent graduates in gaining practical experience in wildlife biology and field science. The programme aims to encourage participation in natural sciences while reducing financial barriers for early-career scientists preparing for future careers in wildlife conservation. Selected participants engage in fieldwork and research projects while receiving financial backing for their endeavours.
Who can apply
Eligible applicants must be United States citizens who are either upper-level undergraduate students currently enrolled at an institution or individuals who graduated with an undergraduate degree within the previous two years. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in wildlife research and natural sciences, along with the ability to undertake their preferred research project. Current graduate students, individuals accepted into graduate school, and holders of graduate-level degrees in wildlife biology or related fields are ineligible. Special consideration is given to Black, Indigenous and People of Color candidates.
What you get
The fellowship provides a US$6,000 stipend to support participation and research activities during the programme period. In addition, recipients may receive up to US$4,000 for eligible research-related expenses, bringing the maximum potential support to US$10,000. Covered costs can include research equipment and supplies, required travel, necessary housing for project participation, and other field research expenses based on an approved budget proposal.
Requirements
Applicants must submit a purpose statement of 500 to 800 words detailing their suitability, need for financial support and research experience, encountered barriers, previous career-building experiences, future professional goals, and a description of their preferred research project. Additional required materials include an updated resume or curriculum vitae and a budget proposal estimating financial needs. Applicants must also select a preferred research project from options provided by the organisation and have an academic or professional referee send a reference letter directly to the designated email address.
How to apply
Interested candidates must complete the official online application form and submit all required supporting information. Applicants should review available research projects, prepare their purpose statement and budget proposal, and ensure their referees submit recommendation letters prior to the application deadline.
