Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies Visiting Scholar Program – Spring 2027
Overview
The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies (CHRHS) at the Watson School of International and Public Affairs at Brown University welcomes applications to its Visiting Scholar Program for Spring 2027. The programme is open to academics on sabbatical and to human rights practitioners who would benefit from a short-term affiliation with the Center while working on their own research and writing projects.
Visiting scholars are expected to devote themselves to their own research, and are welcome to take part in the intellectual life of the CHRHS community, including giving a public presentation or workshop on their work.
Costs
The visiting scholar affiliation is a courtesy appointment with no salary, benefits or other compensation. Visiting scholars typically have their own funding through an employer, a home institution or an external grant. Limited shared office space may be available but is not guaranteed.
Who can apply
The programme is open to US-based and international scholars and human rights practitioners. International scholars may need an exchange visitor visa (J-1) to enter the United States. For Spring and Fall 2027, the Center is particularly interested in hosting people who work on asylum and immigration rights and on environmental justice and rights, though scholars in any human rights and humanitarian studies area are welcome.
How to apply
Applicants submit a cover letter stating the preferred timing, a short description and title of the proposed project, and a brief explanation of why it must be pursued in person at Brown. They also provide a research proposal of up to three pages explaining how it fits the Center's thematic priorities and their qualifications, a CV, names and contact details for two references with no letters needed at this stage, and a letter of endorsement from a regular Brown faculty member who would sponsor and supervise the visit.
Key dates
The application deadline is November 1, 2026.
