Kenya is better known as a regional hub for international organisations and research institutes than for one national scholarship scheme. The UN Office at Nairobi serves bodies including UNEP and UN-Habitat; its internships run two to six months. Applicants are usually in the final year of a degree or a graduate programme, or are recent graduates able to start within a year. ILRI, a Nairobi research institute, hosts fellows from master's to visiting-scientist level, with recruitment initiated by its programmes rather than an open call. NGOs and development employers post openings vacancy by vacancy.

Entry and permission to study or work are separate matters. Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, with listed exemptions, and it is not final authority to enter. Studying, interning or working requires a pass or permit from the Directorate of Immigration Services, applied for through the eFNS system using an eCitizen account. Students need a Student Pass tied to admission to an approved institution. Employment mainly falls under lettered work-permit classes, such as Class D for a named employer, while a Special Pass covers temporary business or professional activity.

Pass and permit applications depend on documents from the host institution or employer, so they should be started once an offer exists. Common mistakes include assuming an eTA allows work or an internship, treating every internship as paid, expecting fixed national deadlines when each programme sets its own, and trusting aggregator listings for closed posts.
