Belgium has separate Flemish and French-speaking higher-education systems, so an international applicant's route depends on the institution's community. Flemish universities offer many English-taught master's programmes, while French-speaking institutions teach mainly in French, with some English options. Funding includes Flemish Master Mind scholarships, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master awards, university-specific scholarships, and VLIR-UOS scholarships for nationals of 25 eligible countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

VLIR-UOS applicants apply through the participating institution for both programme and scholarship, may choose only one programme per year, and follow each programme's own deadline, with results announced by mid-May. Non-EEA students staying beyond 90 days generally need a long-stay (type D) visa from the Belgian embassy or consulate in their country of residence, supported by an admission letter, proof of financial means, and criminal-record and medical certificates. Processing can take six to eight weeks.

Common mistakes include starting the visa process late, since appointments can fill quickly; applying to several VLIR-UOS programmes, which makes the application ineligible; and using outdated figures, because the minimum monthly means requirement is reviewed annually. Applicants seeking internships or graduate jobs should confirm work rules with the immigration authorities.
