Austria offers a mix of degree study, short research stays and post-graduation employment. Most programmes are taught in German, though some are in English, and many require proof of German. Master's entry generally requires a relevant bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS; a doctorate usually requires a master's degree in the same field plus a research proposal. OeAD, the national agency for international cooperation, runs Ernst Mach Grants for young researchers and lecturers and for students from non-European universities.

Universities generally set 5 September for the winter semester and 5 February for the summer semester, but arts universities, private universities and universities of applied sciences set their own, and entrance exams can close up to six months before term. Foreign documents often must be legalised. Non-EU graduates of Austrian institutions can renew a student permit for twelve months to look for work, then apply for a Red-White-Red Card for graduates with a qualifying job offer; there is no points system.

Common mistakes include overlooking German proof, leaving too little time for document legalisation, missing OeAD grant deadlines, which vary through winter and spring, and expecting the job-search year without a completed Austrian degree. Requirements vary by institution and programme, so the admissions office should be contacted first.
