Overview

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a range of scholarships and awards to international students taking undergraduate, postgraduate coursework or research degrees in Sydney, Australia. All disciplines are eligible and students of any nationality can apply. Some awards provide full or partial tuition coverage, while others also include a living stipend. Most are allocated through the Term 3 International Scholarships Application round, and no registration fee is charged at the application stage.

What you get

The Research Training Program International (RTPI) Scholarship is worth AU$39,206 per year at the 2026 rate plus a full Tuition Fee Scholarship. It lasts 3.5 years for a PhD and 2 years for a Master's by Research or Master of Philosophy.

The University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) is worth AU$35,000 per year at the 2026 rate. UNSW funds the tuition fees, and the stipend is funded by the relevant Faculty, School or Supervisor.

The Tuition Fee Scholarship (TFS) fully funds tuition fees and is combined with a research stipend.

Who can apply

Applicants must be international students, not Australian citizens or permanent residents, and must hold an offer of admission to an eligible UNSW program. The scheme covers undergraduate students moving into a Master's program and Master's students moving into a doctoral program. Admitted students must also arrange the mandatory Overseas Student Health Cover.

Requirements

Selection assesses applicants on four areas. These are academic merit, covering academic record and GPA, and leadership skills shown at school, work or in the community. Extra-curricular activities, such as sport, culture, volunteering and professional experience, are also assessed, along with the applicant's personal statement on why they want to study at UNSW and their academic and career goals.

How to apply

Applicants first secure an offer of admission to an eligible program. They then register an account on the UNSW Scholarship Application Online portal, or log in to an existing one, and submit the scholarship application before the published deadline. Some scholarships are also awarded competitively and automatically through the standard admission application, with no separate application needed.
