Overview

The University of Lausanne in Switzerland awards around ten Master's Grants each year. They are excellence scholarships given only to students who graduated from a foreign university with very high academic results. The university was founded in 1537 as a school of Protestant theology and became a university in 1890. Scholarship holders are exempt from the fixed registration fees, apart from CHF 80.00 payable each semester.

What you get

The grant is CHF 1,600 per month from 15 September to 15 July, or ten months a year, for the minimum statutory length of the chosen Master's, which is one and a half or two years. It stops in cases of definitive failure after the first year.

Who can apply

Applicants need a foreign university degree equivalent to a UNIL Bachelor's before the Master's begins and must have distinguished themselves through particularly brilliant results. They need at least B2 in French or C1 in English, depending on the language of the chosen Master's, must never have been registered at UNIL, and must pay a CHF 200.00 administration fee. Some programmes are excluded, including the School of Medicine, Education, most Law Masters (with exceptions for International and comparative law, Legal theory and International taxation), criminal law, Physical Education and Sports Didactics, Health Sciences, Sustainable Management and Technology, and all MAS programmes.

How to apply

Applicants prepare a single PDF file and register and upload it online. Applications by email or incomplete applications are not considered. Two letters of recommendation, from teachers or an employer, must be sent directly by the author from a professional email address after online registration. Candidates whose diplomas come from a state that has not ratified the Lisbon Convention must also post certified, sealed copies of diplomas and transcripts to the university's Social Affairs and Student Mobility Service in Lausanne. This application doubles as the Master's admission application.

Key dates

The deadline is 1 November 2026, with the postmark date counting for posted documents. Applications are processed from November to March, the selection board meets in March, and applicants are notified in early April.
