Overview

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships support outstanding international students, researchers and artists who wish to pursue research or further study in Switzerland. They are open to applicants from more than 180 countries and aim to encourage academic exchange, research cooperation and cultural creativity. In the previous cycle 281 scholars received the award, and up to 500 are supported in the current cycle. There is no application fee, and all academic disciplines and artistic fields are covered.

What you get

The package includes a monthly stipend, tuition fees, an accommodation allowance and housing assistance, health insurance, round-trip economy airfare, and a research fund for materials, laboratory costs and project expenses.

Who can apply

There are four scholarship types. Research Scholarships are for postgraduate researchers with at least a Master's degree who want to do doctoral or postdoctoral research or further study at a Swiss cantonal university, university of applied sciences, ETH Zurich, EPFL or one of four designated research institutes. Candidates must be nominated by an academic mentor at one of these institutions, and the scholarship lasts up to 12 months. PhD Scholarships are for doctoral research at Swiss universities and research institutions and last 12 months. Postdoctoral Scholarships are for established researchers pursuing postdoctoral work at Swiss institutions. Art Scholarships are for students wishing to pursue an initial Master's degree at a Swiss conservatory or university of the arts, and are open to students from a limited number of countries, so eligibility by country should be checked.

Requirements

Fields include natural sciences and mathematics, engineering and technology, life sciences and biomedical research, social sciences and humanities, economics and business, law and political science, environmental sciences and sustainability, and arts, music and creative disciplines.
