SENSS Student-Led PhD Studentships 2027 in the UK: Fully Funded Doctoral Research Opportunities

Overview

The South and East Network for Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership offers the Student-Led Studentships Competition for the 2027 academic year. This funding opportunity supports prospective doctoral researchers wishing to design and undertake original research projects in the social sciences and related interdisciplinary fields. Successful candidates undertake their studies at eight participating partner universities located across the United Kingdom.

Who can apply

The competition is open to talented prospective doctoral researchers developing their own research proposals. SENSS encourages applications from eligible candidates whose backgrounds are underrepresented in higher education and doctoral research, including individuals from less affluent communities, people with disabilities, carers, and those who have experienced care as children. Applicants must ensure they meet the specific admission requirements of their chosen participating university.

What you get

Successful applicants receive financial support for doctoral study in the form of fully funded studentships, subject to individual eligibility and award terms. Depending on academic background and qualifications, recipients may receive funding for a PhD or support to complete a master’s degree before progressing to doctoral research. Students also receive guidance from expert academic supervisory teams and have opportunities to work with collaborative partners outside academia, such as businesses, charities, and think tanks.

How to apply

Applicants must submit their applications online through the official HEIApply application platform on the SENSS application page. Candidates need to develop their own research proposals, identify suitable supervisors, and check university-specific admission requirements and deadlines. The funding application must be submitted by the established deadline, noting that university admission deadlines may fall earlier.

Key dates

The application deadline is Monday, 11 January 2027, at 12:00 noon GMT. Expected notification of results takes place by mid-April 2027. The successful studentships are scheduled to begin in October 2027.
