Overview

Newcastle University is offering a funded PhD studentship supported by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria. The project explores how women with female-specific cardiovascular risk factors understand cardiovascular risk, how risk is communicated to them and how preventative care is experienced. It follows a sequential mixed-methods design.

Cardiovascular disease is the biggest cause of death and poor health in women according to the World Health Organisation. Risk factors specific to women include polycystic ovary syndrome, hormonal contraception, gestational hypertension, menopause and hormone replacement therapy. Women often underestimate their risk, find it hard to follow treatment guidelines and report poor interactions with healthcare professionals. The student will examine awareness of these risks and experiences of communication and preventative care.

What you get

The award pays 100 percent of home tuition fees and an annual stipend of 21,805 GBP (the 2026 to 27 UKRI rate), with additional funding for research costs and travel.
