PhD Studentship: New pharmacological tools for targeting P2X receptors in cancer
Overview
This PhD studentship focuses on developing new pharmacological tools for targeting P2X receptors in cancer under the supervision of Dr Leanne Stokes. The research takes place within the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy, and Pharmacology at the University of East Anglia. The investigation aims to characterize P2X receptor expression and variants in cancer cells under varying conditions and to evaluate the effects of blocking these receptors on cancer cell survival and growth. Planned activities include analyzing RNAseq and quantitative PCR data, utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to create P2X7 and P2X4-null cancer cells, and testing dual antagonists in in vitro assays.
Who can apply
The opportunity is open to UK applicants. Candidates should be graduates in Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, MPharm, Biomedicine, or Biological Sciences. The project is particularly suited for individuals with a background in Biomedical Science or Pharmacology.
What you get
The funding covers home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend for three years. The institutional PhD stipend rate is £21,805 per annum, which is subject to an agreed inflationary uplift for the 2027/28 period. Successful candidates will develop skills in cell culture, molecular biology, gene editing, and pharmacology, alongside various transferable skills.
Requirements
Applicants must hold the standard minimum entry requirement of a 2:1 degree in Pharmacology, MPharm, Biomedicine, Biomedical Science, or Biological Sciences.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 24 February 2027. The program is scheduled to start on 1 October 2027.
