Overview

This doctoral opportunity addresses a key engineering challenge by combining generative models with neural operators to create a closed-loop system for real-time multiphysics design. Traditional engineering design suffers from a bottleneck where evaluating physical performance takes significantly longer than generating candidate geometries. This project focuses on overcoming that limitation by developing a system that allows designers to generate, evaluate, and refine components in real time. The research has direct applications in multifunctional lightweight parts, thermal management, and electromagnetic components. The fixed-term project spans three and a half years with a start date scheduled between 1st August 2027 and 1st July 2028.

What you get

The studentship provides full coverage of tuition fees alongside an annual tax-free stipend of £23,805. This funding is available to Home, EU, and International students. Researchers will work in a dynamic, intellectually stimulating environment under the supervision of Dr. Ajit Panesar and Prof. Rob Hewson, whose combined expertise covers generative design, structural metamaterials, engineering optimisation, and scientific machine learning.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to have achieved or be on track to achieve a First class honours MEng/MSci or higher degree, or an international equivalent. This academic background must be in Aeronautics or Mechanical Engineering.

Key dates

The closing date for applications is 4th January 2027, with the deadline set at 23:59 UK time on that date. The start date for the position falls between 1st August 2027 and 1st July 2028.
