PhD Studentship - HK Stephenson Endowment Funded Scholarship for a PhD in Architectural Humanities
Overview
The School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield offers a 3.5-year fully funded scholarship, the HK Stephenson Endowment Funded Scholarship, for a Home student with an excellent idea for a PhD in Architectural Humanities. The project can be any architectural humanities topic that fits the expertise of the school's Situated Humanities Research cluster.
Possible approaches include postcolonial studies of industrial landscapes or built environments, humanities-based environmental studies of spatial, landscape or urban cultures, histories of industry and their effects on migration and urban settlements, spatial and gendered approaches to history including domestic and health spaces, wellbeing and marginal spaces, gender studies of spatial practices, and feminist histories of architecture. Projects may use archival, theoretical, historiographic, ethnographic, creative or practice-based methods and cover periods from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries.
Who can apply
The scholarship is for Home students. It is a full-time, in-person PhD: online students are not accepted, but part-time applications can be considered.
What you get
The scholarship covers Home student fees and a living allowance stipend in line with the UKRI standard minimum stipend, 21,805 GBP for 2026/27 and rising annually with inflation, plus expenses to be agreed.
How to apply
Applicants first send a short research pre-proposal of 300 words to suitable potential supervisors in the Situated Humanities cluster. Once a supervisor agrees to support the proposal, it is developed into a Research Project Proposal, with a CV and references, and submitted as a full application through the university's portal.
Key dates
The full application deadline is 16 November 2026. Interviews take place in the week commencing 7 December 2026, online or in person, and the targeted start date is 1 February 2027.
