PhD Studentship: From Spectra to Marine Litter: Multispectral Imaging and AI for Aerial Detection and Monitoring
Overview
This doctoral project focuses on developing scalable automated methods to detect, classify, and quantify marine litter using multispectral imaging and artificial intelligence for aerial monitoring. The research addresses current challenges in marine litter assessment in the United Kingdom, Europe, and globally, contributing evidence for international action on plastic pollution. The successful candidate will be based in the Colour & Imaging Laboratory within the School of Computing Sciences at the University of East Anglia and will collaborate closely with scientists and engineers at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.
What you get
The position provides a fully-funded ARIES studentship for candidates who meet United Kingdom Research and Innovation eligibility criteria, covering university fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for the 2026/27 period, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are open to international applicants, with the registering university waiving the difference between home and international fees. The funding does not cover relocation costs, living expenses in the United Kingdom, visa fees, or the health surcharge. Training includes imaging principles, laboratory measurement, computer vision, deep learning, geospatial analysis, experimental design, and potential fieldwork opportunities involving drone operations.
Requirements
Applicants should possess a scientific, quantitative, or computational background, with welcome disciplines including computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, environmental science, and biological science. Prior expertise across all listed areas is not required, but essential traits include curiosity, analytical thinking, and a willingness to learn, alongside a genuine interest in environmental challenges.
Key dates
The closing date for applications is 2026-12-16.
