PhD Studentship: Chemical Biology to target bacteria: Inhibiting bacterial growth by controlling cell division protein interactions
Overview
This four-year PhD studentship focuses on a chemical biology and microbiology project addressing antibiotic-resistant pathogens by targeting bacterial cell division protein interactions. The research involves designing, synthesising, and testing compounds to prevent essential protein-protein interactions used by pathogens such as the causative agent of tuberculosis. Using Mycobacteria smegmatis as a model organism, the appointed student will work within a collaborative environment utilising facilities across the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology and The John Innes Centre. The project is supported by the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme for October 2027 entry and includes a three-month professional internship placement.
Who can apply
Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a first class, 2(i) or equivalent Honours degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related area. Applicants must also meet the Faculty of Science English language requirement, which is an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6 in each category. Selection for admission is conducted without regard to gender, marital or civil partnership status, disability, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, or social background.
What you get
