Overview

The Government of the Republic of Mauritius offers the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme 2027 to provide higher education opportunities for eligible African students at public higher education institutions in Mauritius. Managed through the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, the programme supports full-time, on-campus study pathways for undergraduate diplomas, undergraduate degrees, Master of Philosophy, combined MPhil/PhD, and Doctor of Philosophy programmes during the 2027 academic year.

Who can apply

Applicants must be resident citizens of active member states of the African Union or eligible African Commonwealth countries, while Mauritian nationals are excluded from applying. Undergraduate applicants must be over 18 years of age and under 26 years old by 1 January 2028, and they must not already hold an undergraduate degree. Postgraduate applicants for MPhil, MPhil/PhD, and PhD programmes must be under 40 years of age by 1 January 2028. All candidates must meet the admission standards of their chosen public higher education institution in Mauritius.

What you get

Successful applicants receive financial support covering annual tuition fees up to MUR 100,000 for beneficiaries from SADC countries or up to MUR 160,000 for non-SADC country beneficiaries. Awardees also receive a monthly living allowance of MUR 16,500, return airfare via the most economical route between their home country and Mauritius, and access to free healthcare in Mauritian public hospitals. Students remain responsible for initial arrival funds of at least USD 1,000, accommodation, travel insurance, books, and any expenses exceeding the established financial limits.

Requirements

Undergraduate diploma applicants generally need five credits at School Certificate, GCE O-Level or equivalent, including English or proof of English proficiency. Undergraduate degree candidates generally require at least 21 points in three principal A-Level subjects, an equivalent overall average of 60 percent or 12/20, or an equivalent qualification. Postgraduate candidates seeking MPhil or MPhil/PhD tracks generally require a recognised undergraduate degree with at least an upper second-class classification or a GPA above 60 percent, whereas PhD applicants must meet specific doctoral admission criteria. Postgraduate applicants must also secure written acceptance from a proposed supervisor and provide an abridged research proposal.
