LSE MPhil/PhD Law 2027: Application Guide, Eligibility, Requirements and Deadline
Overview
The London School of Economics and Political Science offers the MPhil/PhD Law programme through the LSE Law School, providing a structured environment for advanced legal research. Based at Houghton Street in London, United Kingdom, this graduate research programme is intended to help candidates develop original contributions to legal scholarship under the supervision of experienced scholars. The course of study spans three to four years, with a minimum duration of two years, and operates on a full-time basis.
Who can apply
The programme is open to both Home and Overseas students who are prepared to conduct substantial independent legal research. Applicants must normally hold a completed LLM degree or another master's-level qualification with an average mark of 70%, which equates to distinction or first-class honours. Candidates currently completing an LLM or equivalent master's degree may apply, though priority in admissions is given to applicants who have already secured the required grade by the application deadline. Conditional offers are possible for those still finishing their master's degree, provided these conditions are met by the end of July of the entry year at the latest.
Requirements
Applicants must submit their credentials through the LSE graduate application process using the application code M3ZL. Meeting the minimum academic entry criteria does not guarantee admission, as the selection process evaluates previous academic performance, research motivation, the quality and viability of the proposed research, its expected contribution to legal scholarship, the availability of suitable supervisors, and the overall diversity of the incoming cohort and research subject areas.
What you get
Doctoral candidates work alongside two academic supervisors and engage with an international academic community. The programme incorporates specialised training from the LSE Law School, the Department of Methodology, and the PhD Academy, along with potential access to other LSE courses subject to approval. Students also have opportunities to participate in teaching activities, academic conferences, mooting, pro bono work, working paper activities, research seminars, and academic networking.
Key dates
The academic year for the programme is 2027/28, with studies scheduled to begin on 27 September 2027. The application deadline is 3 December 2026.
