Overview

The Leon Levy Scholarships in Neuroscience programme promotes groundbreaking neuroscience research in the five boroughs of New York City. It supports innovative young researchers during their postdoctoral years, as they develop the ideas and directions that will help them become independent neuroscientists. The programme works to cultivate excellence and innovation in a diverse neuroscience workforce, give Scholars greater research autonomy, build wider professional skills such as writing grants and papers, managing projects and budgets, promoting neuroethics and engaging the community, and sustain an alumni community that encourages collaboration, mentorship, data sharing and team science.

What you get

The scholarship is a three-year award running from September 1, 2027 to August 31, 2030. Scholars receive an annual stipend equal to 125% of the NIH postdoctoral rate for their postdoctoral year, fringe benefits at the host institution's rate, a one-time US$2,000 flexible technology and travel allowance, and an annual supplement of up to US$10,000 for care costs such as dependent care. Indirect support to the host institution is allowed at the standard published rate if under 20%, capped at 20%. Scholars also get a three-year Membership to The New York Academy of Sciences, a structured mentorship programme, leadership and skills workshops, grant writing support and access to the community of past and present Leon Levy Scholars and Fellows.

Who can apply

By the appointment date of September 1, 2027, applicants must hold a doctoral degree such as a PhD, MD, DDS or DVM, and a full-time postdoctoral position at an eligible institution in one of New York City's five boroughs. They should have the support of their proposed Research Advisor when applying, must have no more than three years of cumulative postdoctoral experience, so their doctorate cannot be dated before September 1, 2024, and must conduct neuroscience research during the scholarship. Applicants must also meet one of several status criteria, including being a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident, or holding J-1 Research Scholar or H-1B status valid for the full term. Other qualifying groups include DACA recipients, Jay Treaty rights holders, Temporary Protected Status holders, asylees and refugees, and conditional visas will be considered. Previous Leon Levy Fellowship recipients are not eligible, and there is no limit on applicants per institution or laboratory. Eligible institutions are accredited non-profit academic institutions in the five boroughs that conduct original neuroscience research.
