Overview

The Kochi University of Technology Special Scholarship Program (KUT SSP) 2027 is a fully funded doctoral award for international researchers who want to complete a three-year PhD in Japan. It is aimed at fields such as engineering, informatics, data science, architecture, economics, environmental studies and energy systems, and combines research-based study with academic mentoring from a supervisor.

What you get

Scholars receive a full tuition waiver, with no entrance exam fee and no enrollment fee. A monthly living stipend of ¥150,000 is paid, along with a one-time international relocation allowance of ¥150,000. Further support includes funding for research materials, English academic writing training, Japanese language classes, supervision by a professor in the scholar's field, and cultural exchange events with the university community.

Who can apply

Applicants must commit to full-time PhD research for the whole three-year programme. They need a Master's degree or must complete one before enrollment, and must be 35 or younger at admission. Strong academic records, research potential and publications are expected, and English proficiency must be shown through TOEFL, IELTS or an equivalent certificate.

Requirements

The research topic must come from the official KUT SSP Research Project List, as topics outside it cannot be considered. Written approval from a prospective KUT supervisor is mandatory before the formal application is submitted.

How to apply

The application package includes the completed KUT SSP application form from the programme portal, a detailed research proposal that matches the chosen supervisor's project, a curriculum vitae covering achievements, research experience and publications, academic transcripts from both Bachelor's and Master's studies, degree certificates or proof of expected completion before enrollment, and English proficiency test results.
