Overview

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship is a fully funded fellowship for PhD candidates at universities in the USA. It welcomes applicants from a wide range of disciplines, including history, political science, policy studies, law, political economy, communications and media, and sociology. Applicants are judged on the quality of their scholarship, their promise as a rising junior scholar with intellectual and professional leadership, and their potential to shed new light on contemporary developments in American politics, foreign policy, and America and the World.

What you get

Each Fellow works with a Mentor to build a network of scholars focused on their research expertise, particularly on significant policy-oriented questions. The year of collaboration begins in the fall with a meeting at U.Va., or at the Hagley for the Galambos Fellow, where the agenda is set and recruitment of further network members starts. The network may hold virtual reading groups, workshops, conference panels, symposia and manuscript workshops. A budget allocated to each Fellow covers the costs of these activities.

Who can apply

Applicants must be PhD candidates who expect to complete their dissertation by the end of the Fellowship year, or who have a comprehensive and viable two-year write-up plan backed by compelling documentation. The fellowship is not for postdoctoral candidates. Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens.

Requirements

The application includes an applicant information sheet, a 1,200-word project description and a research plan of up to 500 words. It also needs a network proposal of up to 1,200 words, an op-ed or blog post of up to 750 words, and a professional development statement of up to 500 words. A 3-page bibliography and 2-page CV are required, as is a writing sample of up to 40 pages, consisting of a dissertation chapter with a one-page introduction or an accepted or published journal article. Two letters of recommendation are needed, one from the applicant's advisor.

How to apply

Applications and letters of recommendation are submitted through the application process, and no application is read until every item, including the letters, has been received.

Key dates

The deadline for applications and letters of recommendation is February 1, 2027.
