Overview

The Imperial College London President's PhD Scholarships fund 50 fully funded doctoral places in London for outstanding candidates from anywhere in the world. The funding lasts 3.5 years. Applicants who have just finished a bachelor's degree with exceptional results can apply directly without a master's degree. Both full-time and part-time study are available.

What you get

The scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides GBP 21,400 per year, intended to cover accommodation and living expenses. A further GBP 2,000 per year is available for other expenses.

Who can apply

There are no restrictions on nationality, although some departments may be unable to support international candidates. The scheme is open only to new PhD applications, so currently registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible. Candidates from Imperial, the UK and worldwide are welcome.

Requirements

Candidates must have, or be due to receive, a first-class or equivalent undergraduate or integrated master's degree. Those with a standalone Master's must have achieved a distinction or show evidence of high performance that will lead to one. Candidates with overseas degrees should check with the admissions team whether their grades are equivalent. The scheme has higher than usual entry standards and looks for excellent academic performance and promising research potential.

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship form. Applicants submit an application for admission through the online admission system, and the department refers suitable candidates for the scholarship based on merit and academic potential. The personal statement should be about 1,000 words, with a maximum of 2 pages, describing academic and research achievements and briefly explaining the planned research project. Statements over the 2-page limit are not considered. Candidates must select the President's Doctoral Scholarship option in the funding section of the application and also meet any extra requirements set by their department.
