HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Program 2027/28 (Fully Funded)
Overview
The HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme is the most prestigious doctoral award at The University of Hong Kong, designed to attract high-calibre researchers from around the world to full-time PhD study for the 2027/28 intake. Scholars receive individual academic mentorship, professional development, advisory services and networking with leading researchers.
What you get
The financial package is worth up to HK$445,800 (about US$57,150) in the first year and up to HK$428,300 (about US$54,920) each year after for the normative study period. First-year accommodation in a university residence hall is guaranteed, with possible renewal in later years. Outstanding scholars with high research output may receive an extra year of support beyond the normative period, and faculty advisors and senior researchers provide career planning and guidance.
Who can apply
The programme is open to international and local candidates with exceptional academic achievements and research potential, applying for full-time PhD study at HKU. Applicants need a first-class honours Bachelor's degree or a recognized Master's degree in a relevant field. If earlier degrees were taught in a language other than English, proof of English proficiency is required, for example an IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 with subscores above 6.0, or a TOEFL equivalent.
How to apply
Everyone applying for full-time PhD admission at HKU is automatically considered, so no separate scholarship application is needed. Applicants identify a research supervisor, then gather transcripts, degree certificates, a CV, a research proposal, a statement of purpose, proof of English proficiency and contact details for two academic referees. The application is submitted through the HKU Graduate School online system, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed online or in person by their faculty. Because competition is intense, applicants in the Main Round are advised to apply as well for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme through the Research Grants Council system, obtain a reference number and add it to their HKU application.
Key dates
The Main Round closes on December 1, 2026, and the HKPFS application must also be submitted before 1 December 2026.
