Overview

The Malaria Genomic Epidemiology and Biostatistics Network for Enhancing Talent in Sub-Saharan Africa initiative provides fully funded Master's fellowships for early- and mid-career researchers. Funded by the European Union through Global Health EDCTP3, the programme offers 10 fellowships spanning a duration of two years across four African research institutions. The current application round is specifically for three positions hosted by the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça in Mozambique. The initiative aims to build research capacity in malaria genomic epidemiology and biostatistics while preparing researchers to address malaria and other infectious diseases.

Who can apply

Applicants must be early- and mid-career researchers working in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly those connected to institutions involved in malaria or infectious disease research. Candidates require an academic background in biological sciences, medicine, statistics, public health, economics, or a related discipline. Additional conditions include meeting the admission requirements of an eligible Master's programme, committing to work in a relevant role in sub-Saharan Africa for at least two years post-fellowship, and demonstrating sufficient proficiency in the language of instruction, either English or Portuguese. Previous experience in genomics is not required, career gaps are not penalised, and applications from women and underrepresented groups are encouraged.

What you get

Successful candidates receive full coverage of approved Master's programme tuition fees and a monthly living allowance stipend throughout the fellowship. Additional provisions include a personal laptop, access to high-performance computing facilities, training opportunities through workshops and analytical boot camps, and participation in one regional conference. Fellows also benefit from structured mentorship from national and international malaria experts, as well as an individual development plan and cohort-wide training activities.

Requirements

Applicants must submit a statement of interest of no more than 1,000 words, a curriculum vitae of no more than four pages, two letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and a post-fellowship employment guarantee letter. Candidates must independently apply for and secure admission to an eligible Master's programme, as receiving the fellowship does not automatically guarantee university admission. Eligible programmes include the Master of Science in Public Health and the Master of Science in Applied Statistics at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, as well as the Master's in Applied Clinical Research Global Health Track at Universitat de Barcelona.

Key dates

The application deadline is 30 October 2026 at 23:59 Central Africa Time.
