Overview

The Germany CGIAR++ Science and Impact Hub PhD Scholarship offers doctoral research opportunities for qualified candidates. The programme supports 10 PhD positions in the current call, enabling successful applicants to pursue doctoral studies at a German university while collaborating on ongoing CGIAR++ research activities. The initiative connects doctoral candidates with scientific expertise through cooperative arrangements between CGIAR++ research centres and German universities, aiming to add value to international and multidisciplinary research projects.

Who can apply

Applicants from CGIAR++ partner countries and international candidates are welcome to apply, and German nationality is not required. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to participate. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in agricultural sciences, biology, geography, environmental studies, forestry, marine biology, veterinary medicine, sociology, political sciences, law, economics, or a related discipline, with an above-average final grade.

What you get

Successful candidates receive support to pursue doctoral research connecting a German university PhD programme with an ongoing CGIAR++ research project. The programme facilitates collaborative research placement at a CGIAR++ centre and academic guidance through joint supervision involving a senior CGIAR++ scientist and a German university professor.

Requirements

Applicants must enrol in a PhD study programme at a German university and submit an above-average Master’s degree certificate and academic transcript. Candidates need to provide a signed one-page motivation letter, a signed and dated one-page tabular curriculum vitae, a research proposal on the official template, and an accepted English proficiency certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS. A collaborative arrangement called a tridem must be formed, requiring candidates to secure commitment, recommendation letters, and supervision confirmation from both a senior CGIAR++ scientist and a German university professor, alongside a hosting agreement from the relevant CGIAR++ centre.

How to apply

Interested candidates must review the official call, identify a suitable senior CGIAR++ scientist and a German university professor, and jointly develop a research proposal using the official template. Applicants prepare and submit their required personal documents while coordinating with their supervisors to have the recommendation letters, supervision commitments, and hosting agreement submitted together as one PDF via email to hub@landscapealliance.org.

Key dates

The application deadline for the PhD scholarship is 30 November 2026.
