Overview

The University of Victoria in Canada offers a two-year Master of Science research position focused on mapping and quantifying wildfire severity using satellite time series and three-dimensional forest structure data. This position is based in the Remote Sensing and AI Lab within the Department of Geography and is advertised through the University of Washington College of the Environment. The selected student is expected to begin the programme in Fall 2027.

The research investigates how wildfires affect forest structure by combining satellite observations, airborne and spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging data, and geospatial analysis. The project uses dense Landsat satellite time series alongside three-dimensional forest structure information to examine relationships between spectral burn severity and structural changes in forests after fires.

Who can apply

Graduates in geography, environmental science, forestry, geomatics, earth science, and related disciplines who want to develop advanced research skills are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have research interests in remote sensing, geographic information systems, forest ecology, wildfire science, environmental science, or related fields. Desirable technical skills include remote sensing, LiDAR, geographic information systems, Python, R, Google Earth Engine, and geospatial data analysis, though technical experience is desirable rather than required.

What you get

The position provides a two-year funded Master of Science opportunity, which is supported through research funding and/or teaching assistantships. The exact funding amount, monthly stipend, tuition coverage, and the exact division between research funding and teaching assistantships are not specified.

How to apply

Applicants must submit an expression of interest by emailing Dr. Ji Won Suh. The required initial documents include a curriculum vitae, unofficial academic transcripts, and a brief statement explaining research interests and relevant experience.

Key dates

The deadline to express interest is November 15, 2026. The selected student is expected to begin the programme in Fall 2027.
