Overview

The DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa offers fully funded scholarship opportunities for graduates and postgraduate students to pursue selected development-related Master's degree programmes within Africa. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service, the initiative aims to strengthen higher education systems by supporting talented individuals who can contribute to teaching, research, and sustainable development in African higher education institutions. The scholarship supports study either within an applicant's home country or in another country within Sub-Saharan Africa, across participating universities in nations such as Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.

Who can apply

The programme is open to graduates and postgraduate students from Sub-Saharan Africa. It particularly encourages applications from women, recognised refugees, and candidates from marginalised regions or groups. Applicants can choose between an In-Country scholarship, which allows study in their home country or a country where they hold a valid residence permit, and an In-Region scholarship, which supports study in another Sub-Saharan African country outside the applicant's home country and residence location.

What you get

Successful scholars receive a monthly scholarship allowance and a study and research allowance to help meet academic expenses. The funding also covers tuition fees where applicable and provides support for thesis publishing costs. For those receiving an In-Region scholarship, additional benefits include a travel allowance and health insurance. Funding is generally provided for the regular duration of the Master's programme, which is normally up to two years.

Key dates

The application deadline is November 12, 2026.
