🇺🇸 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program 2027
Overview
The Critical Language Scholarship Program is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State that offers fully funded intensive language and cultural immersion experiences overseas. Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by American Councils for International Education, the program provides study opportunities in languages deemed critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness. Participants spend approximately 8 to 10 weeks abroad during the summer gaining instruction equivalent to one academic year of college-level study while living and interacting within local communities.
Who can apply
Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree-granting program at the associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level. Candidates must also be at least 18 years of age by the program start date. The program welcomes applicants from all academic disciplines and encourages participation from diverse backgrounds, including students from minority-serving institutions, community colleges, first-generation college students, and individuals from rural or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
What you get
The scholarship is fully funded by the U.S. Government and covers nearly all costs associated with the experience. Funding includes full tuition and academic instruction at the host institution, round-trip international airfare between the United States and the host country, and room and board for the duration of the program. Additional covered benefits include cultural excursions, group activities, language partner programs, and health and accident insurance.
