Overview

The Carnegie Mellon University Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa 2027 is a six-course online program created for learners interested in building artificial intelligence applications relevant to the African context. The curriculum includes a perspective and context track covering artificial intelligence past, present, and future alongside artificial intelligence and machine learning in Africa. It also features a technical track covering python for artificial intelligence, mathematical foundations of machine learning, machine learning essentials, and applied generative ai. These courses are designed by Carnegie Mellon University professors of engineering. Each course consists of 14 or 15 lessons requiring approximately three hours each, totaling around 45 hours per course, and learners should plan to spend at least five to six hours per week. The program does not offer university credit, but learners earn digital badges for each course and a shareable, verifiable certificate upon completing all six courses.

Who can apply

Applicants must satisfy several prerequisites to qualify for the certificate program. These include having completed introductory courses in linear algebra and probability and statistics, possessing computer programming experience, having access to reliable internet with a laptop or desktop computer, and being able to commit at least five hours available each week to work on the lessons. Enrollment is determined by invitation based on the submitted application and available space in the next cohort.

What you get

Qualified applicants can participate in the program at no cost. Learners gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and acquire skills to demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, capabilities, and limitations of artificial intelligence tools and techniques. Participants also learn to apply foundational analytical and technical skills for artificial intelligence-driven solutions in Africa, develop models and solutions using current tools, frameworks, and best practices, design real-world challenges into data-driven solutions, and determine the impact of solutions using appropriate metrics, validation techniques, and critical thinking. Successful participants receive digital badges for individual courses and a verifiable certificate for completing all six courses.

How to apply

Applicants must submit their name and contact information, academic background, professional experience, curriculum vitae, and a brief statement of personal professional goals.
