Canada Graduate Research Scholarship 2027 (Fully Funded)
Overview
The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS-D) is a competitive PhD scholarship jointly administered by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. It supports outstanding doctoral candidates doing high-quality research at eligible Canadian and selected international institutions. All research disciplines are covered, including health sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences, social sciences, humanities and interdisciplinary research. Joint programs such as MD/PhD, JD/PhD, MSc/PhD, MA/PhD and MBA/PhD with a strong research component are also eligible.
What you get
Recipients receive CAD $40,000 per year for up to 36 months. The funding may be held at eligible Canadian universities or, under certain conditions, at eligible international institutions.
Who can apply
Both domestic and international students can apply. Applicants must be enrolled in or applying to a research-based doctoral program and must have completed no more than 36 months of full-time doctoral study by December 31 of the application year. They must not have held a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC, or a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. Only one CGRS or Tri-Agency application can be submitted per academic year, and international applicants must be enrolled at an eligible Canadian institution by the application deadline.
How to apply
Applicants apply to the agency that best fits their research subject, so that experts closest to their field review the file. CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC each publish guidance on subject matter eligibility, and applicants who are unsure can contact the agencies. Applications go in electronically through the relevant agency platform, which is ResearchNET for CIHR, an online system for NSERC and a registration and login system for SSHRC. All referees must submit their letters through the same online system before the deadline.
Key dates
Applicants applying through an institution must meet the institution's deadline, which may be well before the agency deadline, so they should check with their faculty of graduate studies. Those eligible to apply directly to an agency must submit before 8:00 pm (ET) on October 17. If that date falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted the following business day before 8:00 pm (ET).
