Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) Scholarships In Germany 2027 (Fully Funded)
Overview
The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is a research-driven graduate school in mathematics run jointly by Humboldt University of Berlin, Freie Universitat Berlin and Technische Universitat Berlin, in cooperation with research institutes including the Weierstrass Institute and Zuse Institute Berlin. Taught entirely in English, it offers Master's and PhD study that is tuition-free, with financial support for selected international students.
What you get
Benefits include tuition-free Master's and PhD programmes, funded PhD positions, access to leading mathematical research facilities, supervision by internationally known mathematicians, an interdisciplinary research environment in Berlin, and membership in the Berlin University Alliance. Scholarships are available in Phase I.
Who can apply
The programme has two entry routes. Phase I is the Master's stage, for students who finish a Bachelor's degree by the summer of the current year, with a strong mathematics background and clear motivation for research. It starts in October and focuses on advanced coursework and qualifying examinations. Phase II is direct entry into doctoral research for applicants with a Master's degree in mathematics or a closely related field, showing strong research potential and good references, whose interests align with BMS faculty. Phase II admission requires secured funding for at least three years, and applications are reviewed together with potential supervisors. Research areas include pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, data science and modelling, probability and statistics, geometry and topology, and analysis and algebra.
How to apply
Applications go through the BMS online portal, where applicants select Phase I or Phase II. Required documents are academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and letters of reference. Phase II applications are forwarded to potential supervisors.
Key dates
The first round runs from 1 October to 1 December 2026 and the second round from 1 March to 1 April 2027.
