Overview

The AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, are designed to build the United Kingdom capacity for doctoral research, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and foster an inclusive research culture in the arts and humanities. Birmingham City University is one of fifty participating universities across the UK selected to receive funding through this initiative. For the September 2027 entry, the university will offer six fully funded PhD studentships, with three supported by the AHRC and three match-funded by the institution.

Who can apply

The programme welcomes both home and international applicants who meet the eligibility criteria. The initiative places a strong emphasis on equality, diversity, and inclusion. Specifically, at least one of the six studentships each year is dedicated to a home-fee-status candidate from a Global Majority background. Furthermore, one international applicant per year is eligible to receive a full tuition fee waiver alongside a stipend provided at the UK Research and Innovation rate.

What you get

Successful candidates receive a comprehensive funding package that covers home tuition fees and a stipend, along with additional funding opportunities designed to alleviate the financial burdens of doctoral study. In addition to financial support, recipients gain entry into a structured research environment featuring expert supervision and an interdisciplinary training network connecting doctoral candidates across the Midlands. This regional cohort allows researchers to exchange ideas, acquire advanced skills in research design and academic communication, and participate in a broader academic community.

How to apply

The application process consists of an optional but strongly encouraged Expression of Interest stage, followed by a full doctoral funding application. Prospective applicants should carefully prepare their research interests, review the official guidance notes, and ensure all required documents are submitted before the corresponding deadlines. An applicant writing workshop is also scheduled to help candidates prepare.

Key dates

The applicant writing workshop takes place on 7 November 2026 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm UK time. The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is 16 November 2026 at 12:00 noon UK time. The final application deadline is 20 January 2027 at 12:00 noon UK time.
