Overview

The Yale Tobin Center Pre-Doctoral Fellows Program 2027–2028 is a full-time, on-campus research training opportunity hosted by the Tobin Center for Economic Policy and the Department of Economics at Yale University. The initiative is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor's or master's degree and want to gain advanced research experience in economics while preparing for doctoral studies. Participants work closely with leading faculty mentors for an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of renewing the appointment for a second and final year. Most positions begin in July, though other start dates may be negotiable.

Who can apply

The programme welcomes graduates who hold a bachelor's or master's degree and are considering pursuing a PhD in economics or a closely related discipline. The cohort is particularly relevant for those interested in applied economic research areas such as economic policy, development economics, public finance, environmental and energy economics, health economics, housing, criminal justice, and social protection. The programme encourages applications from individuals of different backgrounds, identities, viewpoints, academic experiences, and intellectual interests. Visa sponsorship is available for accepted international candidates unless a specific project description states otherwise.

What you get

Fellows receive a competitive salary alongside standard employment benefits, which include health insurance. Beyond financial compensation, participants gain hands-on, data-intensive research experience by contributing to ongoing faculty projects. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in professional development activities, academic events, and university coursework, allowing them to take one course per semester either for academic credit or by auditing.

How to apply

Applications are currently open and are considered on a rolling basis until all available positions have been filled. Interested candidates should review the available research positions and submit their applications as early as possible.
