Overview

This initiative seeks research projects that place women’s economic empowerment at the center of transport policy, infrastructure, services, and operations. The funding opportunity aims to generate evidence for practical change, addressing gender disparities in transport systems across low- and middle-income countries. The call is managed through RIDE’s Partnership Pillar, led by GIZ, and its Research Pillar, led by WRI, in partnership with Women Mobilize Women and the Global Alliance for Feminist Transport.

Who can apply

Researchers working on gender equality, sustainable mobility, women’s economic participation, climate resilience, transport safety, and inclusive development are encouraged to explore this opportunity, particularly those conducting research in eligible partner countries.

What you get

At least two research projects will receive funding ranging from £150,000 to £200,000 per project. The maximum project duration is 15 months, and all funded projects must be completed by 31 March 2028.

Requirements

Applicants must develop proposals around one of two designated research themes. The first theme focuses on violence against women and girls in transit and the implications for their economic empowerment, examining how harassment, violence, and restrictive social norms shape mobility and economic outcomes. The second theme examines how climate-related disruptions to transport affect women’s economic opportunities and when these economic losses may become permanent. Strong proposals must establish a clear connection to women’s economic empowerment and explain how the findings can support practical changes in transport policy or operations.

Key dates

Applications are due by Friday, 20 November 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Central European Time. All funded projects must be completed by 31 March 2028.
