WMO Internships 2026: Paid Internship Opportunities at the World Meteorological Organization for Students and Recent Graduates
Overview
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) runs an Internship Programme for students and recent graduates. Interns work in meteorology, climatology, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences, as well as public international administration. The programme has agreements with universities and academic institutions in fields relevant to WMO's activities, supporting an exchange of knowledge and expertise. Interns are employed for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve.
Who can apply
The programme is open to students and recent graduates who are interested in an area related to WMO's core activities. This includes students nearing the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, students who need an internship to complete their degree, and recent graduates aged between 21 and 35 with less than two years of relevant work experience. It also covers people holding a scholarship for an internship in an international organisation, and those sponsored by a governmental or non-governmental body such as an NGO, or by an academic institution to work in specific areas of WMO.
Requirements
Interns must adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, communicate well and work effectively in a team. Working knowledge of English, spoken and written, is essential, and a second UN language, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish, is desirable.
What you get
Interns recruited in Geneva receive a stipend of CHF 1,500 per month. Those in Regional or Sub-Regional Offices receive a 10 percent Daily Subsistence Allowance for 30 days a month, and remote interns receive CHF 300 per month. If a Member State or university funds the intern, the sending entity's allowance policy applies. Interns earn 2.5 days of leave per month, unused leave is not compensated, and insurance cover is provided as described by WMO. Learning outcomes include understanding WMO's mandate, rules and UN processes, completing mandatory training, strengthening communication skills and building stakeholder networks.
