Overview

The United Nations Office for Project Services is seeking a Climate Education Specialist to assist the Government of The Bahamas in embedding climate change education within the national education system. The role centres on curriculum development, capacity building for teachers, climate policy support, and fostering partnerships to enhance climate resilience and awareness. This vacancy is connected to the UNOPS Global Portfolios Office, specifically its Water, Environment and Climate portfolio, and also supports the NDC Partnership. The position is structured as a home-based retainer opportunity lasting for 12 months with a maximum of 220 working days, with possible extension depending on funding availability and performance. Although home-based, the selected individual will work from government facilities rather than a UNOPS office and must supply their own laptop and software.

Who can apply

This opening is designated as a local vacancy. Applicants are required to be nationals of The Bahamas or possess a valid Bahamian residence permit.

Requirements

Candidates must satisfy specific educational and professional background criteria. Applicants must hold either a master’s degree in fields such as public policy, education, development, climate change, natural resource management, environmental management, or a related area, or a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline accompanied by two additional years of relevant work experience, making a total of seven years. Furthermore, candidates need a minimum of five years of professional experience in the public or private sector centred on education, climate change, project management, or a related field. Experience in developing or implementing climate and education initiatives is required, alongside familiarity with national climate policies, plans, and strategies. Additional advantageous experience encompasses curriculum development, teacher training, climate policy reform, familiarity with UNFCCC processes and NDCs, stakeholder coordination, and resource mobilization.
