University of Iceland Opens Applications for Fully Funded PhD Position in Economics – Apply By 4 August 2026
Overview
The University of Iceland is offering a full-time, two-year PhD position in Economics in the Department of Economics in Reykjavik, funded by the University of Iceland Research Fund. The post belongs to the Consortium on Compensating Income Variation (ConCIV) research team and examines the economic value of education and retirement through the Compensating Income Variation approach. Combining labour and welfare economics, the project estimates how education and retirement affect the subjective well-being of individuals and their family members, using longitudinal data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey and natural experiments such as changes in compulsory schooling laws and retirement age. The work builds on earlier ConCIV research and is supervised by Professor Tinna Laufey Asgeirsdottir within a team of domestic and international experts.
The PhD student joins collaborative research with the supervisor and team, analyses HILDA data, conducts independent research in labour and welfare economics, publishes in international peer-reviewed journals, writes a dissertation of at least three publishable papers, presents at national and international conferences and takes part in science communication and outreach.
