Overview

The UNIDO Internship Programme gives students and recent graduates a way to gain practical experience at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the UN specialised agency for industrial development. The organisation promotes inclusive and sustainable industrial development, covering areas such as industrial innovation, environmental sustainability, digital transformation and job creation. Placements are offered at headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and at UNIDO field offices around the world, with postings varying by department, region and focus area.

Who can apply

Candidates must be in the final year of a Bachelor's degree, enrolled in a Master's programme or higher, or have graduated with a Bachelor's or Master's degree within the last 12 months. Applicants also need to be nationals of a UNIDO Member State and fluent in the working language of the duty station. The organisation looks for integrity, respect for diversity, teamwork, curiosity and strong communication and research abilities.

What you get

From September 2025, interns receive a monthly stipend to help with living expenses. Internships normally last 3 to 6 months, while sponsored internships can run for up to 12 months. Start dates fall on the first working day of each month. The internship does not guarantee later employment, but the experience is regarded as useful across UN agencies, and many of them count it toward minimum requirements for entry-level roles.

How to apply

Internships are advertised throughout the year on the UNIDO careers portal. Applicants search the available postings, check the eligibility and qualification requirements, and submit an application through the online system. A resume and a motivation statement that reflect an interest in industrial development, sustainability and international cooperation are recommended, along with a cover letter tailored to the specific posting and a clear statement of availability.

Key dates

There is no single deadline, since postings appear regularly. All applications are reviewed, but only shortlisted candidates are contacted for interviews or assessments. Applications stay in UNIDO's database for up to one year for possible future opportunities.
