UNFPA Human Rights Officer Consultant in Accra, Ghana: Apply for the 9-Month Individual Consultancy Before 31 August 2026

Overview

The United Nations Population Fund is seeking an Individual Consultant, Human Rights Officer, for its Country Office in Accra, Ghana. The nine-month, part-time consultancy supports the Gender and Human Rights programme, with a focus on reducing gender-based violence, strengthening human rights approaches, advancing gender equality and progressing the International Conference on Population and Development agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 5. The consultant works under the UNFPA Representative and directly under the Head of the Gender and Human Rights Programme.

What the role involves

The consultant analyses human rights issues, supports a scale-up project and helps ensure that women, young people, adolescents and key populations are considered in programme planning. Duties include planning and coordinating thematic and country-level human rights activities, carrying out research and analysis on accountability, human rights obligations, gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and giving specialised advice to government institutions, civil society, faith-based organisations and development partners. The consultant also follows up on decisions of policy-making bodies, and helps keep UNFPA's work consistent with its Strategic Plan, the Country Programme Document, annual work plans and relevant national and international frameworks. Building relationships with government, multilateral and bilateral agencies and civil society is part of the work.

Requirements

The minimum education is a Master's degree or equivalent, or an LLB plus a Qualifying Certificate in Law. At least three years of relevant experience is required, and English is the required language. Backgrounds in human rights, law, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, programme management and policy analysis are relevant.
