Overview

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) maintains a Consultant Roster, a global pool of experts it can contact when specialized consultancy needs arise. UNFPA works in more than 150 countries and territories on reproductive health, gender equality, human rights, population data and sustainable development. Roster members may be considered for assignments in research, policy development, evaluation, training, capacity building, humanitarian response and similar areas.

Joining the roster does not guarantee a contract. It makes a professional visible for future work that matches their qualifications. Because the roster is general, there are no fixed duties. Each assignment has its own Terms of Reference setting out the scope of work, deliverables, duration, duty station where relevant, remote or on-site arrangements, required expertise and reporting lines.

Who can apply

UNFPA looks for experienced professionals from anywhere in the world. Applicants are generally expected to hold an advanced university degree in a field relevant to the assignment, along with significant professional experience and demonstrated technical expertise in one or more thematic areas. Experience with international organizations, governments, research institutions, NGOs or development partners is valued, and earlier consultancy work with international development agencies is considered highly desirable.

Fluency in English is required, and knowledge of another United Nations official language may be needed or may count as an advantage, depending on the assignment. UNFPA also seeks balanced gender representation and strongly encourages women to apply.

Requirements

Applicants should show the organization's values: integrity, commitment to UNFPA and the United Nations system, respect for cultural diversity and openness to change. Core competencies include achieving results, accountability, professional expertise and business acumen, analytical and strategic thinking, teamwork, relationship building and clear communication. Individual assignments may add further technical requirements.

What you get

Consultants receive remuneration based on the complexity, level of expertise required, duration and nature of each assignment, with payment arrangements set out in the relevant Terms of Reference. Roster members may work with multidisciplinary, multicultural teams across several countries and regions.

How to apply

Applications are made online. Candidates should complete every section carefully, and in particular list all their areas of expertise under the Expertises section, since this information is used to match consultants with assignments. Highlighting advanced education, previous consultancy work, language skills and technical specialization helps.
