Overview

UNESCO is seeking a Research Scientist in Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. The post is at the P-3 professional level within the Natural Sciences Sector, on a two-year renewable fixed-term appointment, and is open to internal and external candidates. The approximate annual starting salary is €90,666, with applicable benefits and entitlements.

ICTP was founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, and its mandate includes giving scientists from developing countries continuing education and skills for long scientific careers. The role reflects this by combining research with teaching, mentoring and international cooperation.

What the role involves

Working under the Division Senior Coordinator and supervised by the Head of the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Section, the researcher initiates, develops and coordinates front-line research and reports results at major international meetings. Mentoring is a core duty: the scientist guides postdoctoral fellows, associates, visitors and fellows, and supervises M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.

The post also includes teaching in the ICTP Diploma Programme, supervising Diploma theses, joining international ICTP programmes and possibly helping select students. The scientist builds cooperation with researchers from developing countries, identifies their scientific needs, helps organize ICTP meetings and external activities, and applies for and manages individual research grants.

Requirements

Candidates need a Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics or a related discipline and at least four years of relevant professional experience, with a background in condensed matter and/or statistical physics or a related field. At least two years of experience at the international level is preferred.

Internationally recognized research achievements are expected, along with expertise in quantum many-body systems, quantum information processing, quantum technologies or related areas. Experience teaching or mentoring undergraduate or postgraduate students is also required, and excellent English is essential.

Key dates

Applications close on 7 September 2026 at midnight Paris time.
